Civil justice in the European Union
(April 2008) |
The first Eurobarometer study on civil justice matters reveals that getting involved in a civil justice procedure abroad appears as frightening, unknown and complicated prospect for EU citizens. This survey also highlights a perceived need of additional measures in order to ease citizens' access to civil justice in other Member States. Interestingly, the EU is seen as the best placed actor to take action in this respect. This reflects the general preference among Europeans for harmonised, uniform procedures that should be applied at EU level |

Courtesy on the road
(March 2008) |
Courtesy on the road is not always self-evident. The results of the survey 'Courtesy on the road' show that a clear majority of car drivers fell victim of to aggressive behaviour in the year prior to the survey. Also, nearly two-thirds feel that aggressiveness on the road has increased and around three-quarters of drivers confirm that that they are sometimes very annoyed by other drivers. Most importantly, there seems to be a clear link between drivers showing aggressiveness on the road and in turn being subjected to aggressiveness on the road themselves |

Attitudes of European citizens towards the environment
(March 2008) |
European citizens attach great value to their environment and environmentally-friendly attitudes are widespread according to the new Eurobarometer on ''The attitudes of Europeans towards the Environmen''. Nearly all surveyed (96%) find environmental protection to be important and an overwhelming majority of Europeans (86%) see themselves as playing a role in this respect. Green attitudes do not however always translate into concrete actions: while over half (59%) says they recycled their waste in the month prior to this survey, only 17% had bought environmentally-friendly products. The latter figure sharply contrasts with three-quarters of Europeans stating in the same survey that they are willing to purchase green products. One of the major challenges raised by this survey thus lies in how to better encourage Europeans to act on their convictions. |

Europeans, Agriculture and the Common Agricultural Policy
(March 2008) |
This poll, conducted at the end of 2007, shows that the recent rise in global food prices is being felt by many Europeans: 43% of citizens think that ensuring reasonable food prices should be a main priority of the CAP, with this figure representing an increase of +8 percentage points since the previous survey in 2006. Opinion on the CAP itself remains largely positive: on balance Europeans see the policy as performing well on a range of policy aims and give a strong endorsement of recent changes in the way funding is distributed to farmers. This report also addresses issues such as the importance of agriculture for Europe's future, trade liberalisation and the CAP budget. |

The European Parliament
(March 2008) |
This special Eurobarometer, carried out between 22 September and 3 November 2007 in the twenty-seven European Union Member States focuses on the attitudes and opinions of Europeans towards the European Parliament. It reveals that Europe has a positive image in the European public mind, mainly due to its intrinsic nature; the European Parliament is perceived above all as a democratic institution. Compared to other European institutions, the Parliament has the most positive image. Europeans also appreciate the role played by the European Parliament in certain decisions regarding their daily lives. Nevertheless, the lack of knowledge of the general public about the European Parliament is evident and this could, in time, tarnish the European Parliament's image |
